GOAL!!!! The EuroCup Final Has Set Up a Fun, In-House Rivalry.

All over the world, soccer is immensely popular.  In fact, it is the most popular sport worldwide.  This is a hard fact for Americans to swallow when we have the greatest sporting event of them all; Super Bowl Sunday.   I will admit; soccer is not in my top five of favorite sports.  I could care less about Major League Soccer or the Premier League, but I love to watch international soccer, especially my team of Italy.   I have my Italian soccer jersey all ready for the EuroCup championship match this Sunday when the Italians take on the English.  The English soccer team happen to have a very dedicated American fan as well in my wife whose ancestry reaches far back into the castles and hedgerows of England.  She has her Harry Kane English jersey at the ready.

Does this cause a divide in our house?  Not really, but if the NY Mets were taking on the NY Yankees in the World Series, there would be a definite line drawn across the living room.  It is more of a friendly rivalry between us.  Despite her fondness for English soccer, Jaguars and fish and chips, my wife makes an excellent spaghetti and meatballs which I rank third best only behind my mother and grandmother.  I on the other hand admit to watching the royal weddings and James Bond movies rank amongst my favorites.

This Sunday I will be cheering on the likes of Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile and Federico Chiesa to give Italy their second EuroCup championship while my wife will be cheering on Harry Kane, Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire to give the British their first EuroCup championship.  Despite our support for our ancestral teams, we are Americans first and foremost, so when the Olympics begin, we will be cheering on the American Women’s National Team.  We would cheer for the American Men, but sadly they never seem to qualify, so our nation’s pride is placed solely on the capable shoulders of the women.
